Quillnote is a small command-line notebook. Your notes stay Markdown files in a folder you own, and travel between machines through any git remote you already have.
$ qn new "Ideas for the garden" created notes/2026-11-01-ideas-for-the-garden.md $ qn find tomato notes/2026-06-14-seedlings.md:3 tomatoes go out after the last frost notes/2026-11-01-ideas-for-the-garden.md:1 a second tomato bed by the fence $ qn sync pulled 2, pushed 1 — up to date
Every note is a Markdown file with a date in its name. Open them in any editor, grep them, back them up however you like.
Quillnote commits and pulls for you. Point it at a private repository on any host — or a bare repo on your own server.
Full-text search across thousands of notes in milliseconds, with tags and date ranges, without an index to maintain.
Write on a plane, sync on the ground. Conflicts are rare, and when they happen both versions are kept side by side.
qn init ~/notes turns any folder into a notebook. Existing Markdown files are picked up as they are.
qn remote add takes a git URL. Nothing leaves your machine until you set one.
qn sync runs on demand or every few minutes in the background.
We are polishing conflict handling and packaging. A public release is planned for early 2027.
Linux and macOS. Windows support is on the list but not scheduled yet.
The command-line tool will be free. There are no accounts and no hosted service to pay for.
The beta is currently closed. We will open more seats closer to the release.
